Cientistas criam hemácias sintéticas capazes de transportar medicamentos

Os glóbulos vermelhos, também chamados de hemácias, são responsáveis por absorver o oxigênio dos pulmões e transportá-lo aos outros tecidos do corpo. O fenômeno ocorre graças a um tipo de proteína que existe nestas células e é conhecida como hemoglobina, uma molécula que contém ferro e é capaz de se ligar ao oxigênio circulante.

A hemácia tem forma de disco e é altamente flexível, o que ajuda a espremer através dos pequenos vasos capilares no nosso corpo. Além disso, essa célula têm um tipo de proteína em sua superfície que lhe permite circular por um longo tempo pelos vasos sanguíneos — e sem ser “devorada” pelas células produzidas pelo nosso sistema imunológico.

Tendo essas características em mente, os estudiosos da Universidade do Novo México queriam criar hemácias artificiais que tivessem propriedades semelhantes às naturais, mas que também pudessem realizar novas funções, como transportar medicamentos e detectar toxinas, por exemplo.

Sendo assim, os pesquisadores cobriram uma porção de glóbulos vermelhos doados com uma fina camada de sílica e colocaram polímeros carregados positiva e negativamente sobre eles. Este processo permitiu ao grupo produzir réplicas flexíveis das hemácias, que então foram revestidas com membranas naturais retiradas de outras células.

De acordo com os cientistas, as células artificiais que foram obtidas são semelhantes às naturais em termos de tamanho, forma, carga e proteínas de superfície — elas também podem se espremer através dos vasos capilares. Além disso, quando inseridos em ratos, os glóbulos vermelhos sintéticos duraram mais de 48 horas, sem toxicidade observável.

A equipe também “abasteceu” algumas hemácias artificiais com outras substâncias, como um medicamento anticâncer e um sensor de toxinas ou nanopartículas magnéticas — e os resultados iniciais foram animadores. Desta forma, como explicaram em declaração à imprensa, “estudos futuros irão explorar o potencial das células artificiais em aplicações médicas, como terapia contra o câncer e biossensibilidade a toxinas”.
